कच्चित् सुमित्रा धर्मज्ञा जननी लक्ष्मणस्य या ।
शत्रुघ्नस्य च वीरस्य सारोगा च अपि मध्यमा ॥ ॥२-७०-९॥
Kaccit sumitrā dharmajñā jananī lakṣmaṇasya yā । Śatrughnasya ca vīrasya sārogā ca api madhyamā ॥ ॥2-70-9॥
Translation
Is Sumitra, the knower of Dharma and the mother of Lakshmana and the heroic Shatrughna—the middle mother—also in good health?

क्या लक्ष्मण और वीर शत्रुघ्न की माता, जो धर्म को जानने वाली मंझली माता (सुमित्रा) हैं, वे भी स्वस्थ हैं?
English Commentary
Bharata continues his inquiries by asking about Sumitra, the second wife ("middle mother"). He acknowledges her wisdom (Dharmajña) and her role as the mother of the devoted twins, Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Even though Shatrughna is right there with him, Bharata formally inquires about his mother's well-being, displaying complete familial inclusion.

सुमित्रा को 'धर्मज्ञा' और 'मध्यमा' कहा गया है। सुमित्रा का स्वभाव हमेशा शांत और समन्वयक का रहा है। भरत ने यहाँ शत्रुघ्न को 'वीर' कहा है जो उनके साथ ननिहाल में ही हैं, फिर भी शिष्टाचार वश वे उनकी माता का हाल पूछ रहे हैं। यह भरत के संस्कार हैं कि वे किसी भी माता को भूले नहीं हैं।
