Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अयोध्याम् अग्रतः दृष्ट्वा रथे सारथिम् अब्रवीत् ।
एषा न अतिप्रतीता मे पुण्य उद्याना यशस्विनी ॥ ॥२-७१-१९॥
Ayodhyām agrataḥ dṛṣṭvā rathe sārathim abravīt |
Eṣā na atipratītā me puṇya udyānā yaśasvinī ॥2-71-19॥
Translation
Seeing Ayodhya in front of him, he spoke to the charioteer in the chariot: "This glorious city with holy gardens does not appear to me as it used to (bright and cheerful)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
अपने सामने अयोध्या को देखकर, रथ में बैठे हुए भरत ने सारथी से कहा—"पवित्र उद्यानों वाली यह यशस्विनी नगरी मुझे वैसी (चमकदार/प्रसन्न) प्रतीत नहीं हो रही है (जैसी पहले थी)।"
English Commentary
The climax of the journey is anti-climactic and ominous. Upon sighting Ayodhya, instead of relief, Bharata feels dread. He remarks to the charioteer that the city, usually "yashasvini" (glorious), seems lackluster ("na atipratita"). The spiritual gloom hanging over the mourning city is palpable to him even from a distance, foreshadowing the grief that awaits him.

घर पहुँचने की खुशी के बजाय, भरत को एक अशुभ आभास होता है। नगरी वही है, उद्यान वही हैं, लेकिन 'न अतिप्रतीता' (वैसी प्रतीत नहीं हो रही/जान नहीं पड़ रही)। राजा दशरथ की मृत्यु और राम के वनवास के कारण नगरी की 'श्री' (कान्ति) चली गई है। यह भरत का पहला प्रत्यक्ष संकेत है कि अयोध्या में कुछ भयानक घटित हुआ है।
