भूयिष्ठम् ऋषैः आकीर्णा राज ऋषि वर पालिता ।
अयोध्यायाम् पुरा शब्दः श्रूयते तुमुलो महान् ॥ ॥२-७१-२१॥
Bhūyiṣṭham ṛṣaiḥ ākīrṇā rāja ṛṣi vara pālitā |
Ayodhyāyām purā śabdaḥ śrūyate tumulo mahān ॥2-71-21॥
Translation
This city is teeming with sages and has been protected by excellent Royal Sages (Rajarshis). Previously, a great and tumultuous sound used to be heard within Ayodhya.

यह नगरी अत्यधिक ऋषियों से भरी रहती है और श्रेष्ठ राजर्षियों द्वारा पालित है। पहले इस अयोध्या में एक महान और तुमुल (गूँजता हुआ) कोलाहल सुनाई देता था।
English Commentary
Bharata contrasts the historical vibrancy of Ayodhya with the current silence. He acknowledges the city's legacy, protected by "Rajarshis" (Royal Sages)—kings who ruled with the wisdom and detachment of ascetics. The phrase tumulo mahan (great tumultuous sound) refers to the collective hum of a thriving metropolis—the sounds of commerce, worship, and daily life. The absence of this sound acts as an auditory void. For a returning prince, the lack of this familiar background noise is the first tangible sign that the city is in mourning. It serves as a sensory warning that the "protection" of the Royal Sages may have been compromised.

भरत यहाँ अयोध्या के अतीत और वर्तमान की तुलना करना आरम्भ करते हैं। 'राजर्षि' शब्द दशरथ और इक्ष्वाकु वंश के पूर्वजों के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है, जो राजा होते हुए भी ऋषियों जैसा आचरण करते थे। 'तुमुल शब्द' उस जीवन-ऊर्जा का प्रतीक है जो एक राजधानी में होनी चाहिए—लोगों की आवाजाही, मंत्रोच्चार, और बाज़ार का शोर। भरत को आश्चर्य हो रहा है कि वह परिचित गूँज आज गायब क्यों है। यह श्लोक भरत की बढ़ती हुई बेचैनी को दर्शाता है; उनकी इन्द्रियाँ उस ध्वनि को ढूंढ रही हैं जो 'घर' का प्रतीक है, लेकिन उन्हें केवल सन्नाटा मिल रहा है। यह सन्नाटा किसी सामान्य शांति का नहीं, बल्कि किसी अनहोनी का सूचक है।
