Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अरण्य भूता इव पुरी सारथे प्रतिभाति मे ।
न हि अत्र यानैः दृश्यन्ते न गजैः न च वाजिभिः ॥ ॥२-७१-२४॥
Araṇya bhūtā iva purī sārathe pratibhāti me |
Na hi atra yānaiḥ dṛśyante na gajaiḥ na ca vājibhiḥ ॥2-71-24॥
Translation
O Charioteer! The city appears to me like a wilderness. Neither vehicles, nor elephants, nor horses are to be seen here.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सारथी! यह नगरी मुझे जंगल (अरण्य) के समान प्रतीत हो रही है। यहाँ न तो रथ और गाड़ियाँ दिखाई दे रही हैं, न हाथी और न ही घोड़े दिख रहे हैं।
English Commentary
This verse contains a potent metaphor: the metropolis has become a "wilderness" (aranya bhuta). For Bharata, a city is defined by movement—chariots (yanaiḥ), elephants, and horses. Their absence strips Ayodhya of its identity as a capital, rendering it desolate like a forest. Ironically, this foreshadows the reality that the true "Lion" of Ayodhya (Rama) has actually gone to the forest, and thus the city has lost its soul. The stillness of the usually busy thoroughfares indicates a complete cessation of civic and military activity, hinting at a state of national mourning or paralysis following the King's death.

यह एक बहुत ही शक्तिशाली उपमा है। 'अरण्य भूता' (जंगल बन गई है) का अर्थ है कि जहाँ सभ्यता और व्यवस्था होनी चाहिए थी, वहां अब शून्यता और अव्यवस्था का आभास हो रहा है। अयोध्या, जो अपने वैभव और चतुरंगिणी सेना (हाथी, घोड़े, रथ, पैदल) के लिए प्रसिद्ध थी, आज वीरान है। राजा के बिना राज्य वास्तव में जंगल जैसा हो जाता है जहाँ कोई रक्षक नहीं होता। भरत अनजाने में ही सत्य कह रहे हैं—राम (जो नगर के प्राण थे) के वन चले जाने से नगर ही 'वन' बन गया है। वाहनों और पशुओं की अनुपस्थिति यह बताती है कि राजकाज और व्यापार सब ठप पड़ा है।
