निर्यान्तः वा अभियान्तः वा नर मुख्या यथा पुरम् ।
उद्यानानि पुरा भान्ति मत्तप्रमुदितानि च ॥ ॥२-७१-२५॥
Niryāntaḥ vā abhiyāntaḥ vā nara mukhyā yathā puram |
Udyānāni purā bhānti mattapramuditāni ca ॥2-71-25॥
Translation
Previously, prominent men were seen entering or leaving the city. The gardens used to appear splendid with intoxicated and delighted people.

पहले जैसे प्रमुख लोग (नगर से) बाहर जाते या भीतर आते दिखाई देते थे, (वैसे आज नहीं दिख रहे)। पहले ये उद्यान मदमस्त और अत्यधिक आनंदित लोगों से शोभायमान रहते थे।
English Commentary
Bharata observes the lack of transit at the city gates. The flow of "prominent men" (nara mukhya)—officials, dignitaries, merchants—is the heartbeat of a capital's administration and economy. Their absence suggests a standstill in governance. Bharata reiterates the contrast between the past splendor and current gloom. He recalls scenes of people being "intoxicated with joy" (matta-pramudita), creating a picture of a society that was once carefree and secure. The repetitive mention of the past (pura) underscores his inability to reconcile his happy memories with the grim visual evidence before him.

किसी भी राजधानी के द्वार पर हमेशा गणमान्य नागरिकों, मंत्रियों और व्यापारियों का आना-जाना लगा रहता है। इसे 'नर मुख्या' (प्रमुख लोग) कहा गया है। उनकी अनुपस्थिति यह संकेत देती है कि प्रशासन और समाज का नेतृत्व करने वाले लोग भी शोक में डूबे हैं या कहीं छिपे हैं। भरत बार-बार 'पुरा' (पहले/भूतकाल) शब्द का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं, जो यह दर्शाता है कि उनकी स्मृतियों और वर्तमान वास्तविकता के बीच एक विशाल खाई बन गई है। उद्यानों का बार-बार उल्लेख यह बताता है कि भरत को अयोध्या की खुशहाली और विलासिता (मत्त-प्रमुदित) की याद आ रही है, जो अब पूरी तरह नष्ट हो चुकी है।
