स्रस्तपर्णैरनुपथम् विक्रोशद्भिरिव द्रुमैः ।
नाद्यापि श्रूयते शब्दो मत्तानाम् मृगपक्षिणाम् ॥ ॥२-७१-२७॥
Srastaparṇairanupatham vikrośadbhiriva drumaiḥ |
Nādyāpi śrūyate śabdo mattānām mṛgapakṣiṇām ॥2-71-27॥
Translation
The trees along the path, with their fallen leaves, appear as if they are crying out in distress. Even the sound of intoxicated beasts and birds is not heard today.

रास्ते के किनारे खड़े वृक्ष अपने गिरे हुए पत्तों के कारण ऐसे लग रहे हैं मानो विलाप कर रहे हों। और आज मदमस्त पशु-पक्षियों की आवाज़ भी नहीं सुनाई दे रही है।
English Commentary
The imagery of nature mourning continues. The shedding leaves of the trees are interpreted not as a seasonal change, but as the trees crying out in distress along the path. This projection of grief onto the landscape intensifies the atmosphere of doom. Furthermore, the silence of the animals—the beasts and birds—is unnatural. Usually, nature is indifferent to human affairs, but in poetic epics, the land resonates with the ruler's fate. The silence of the fauna serves as an ominous biological sign, suggesting that the very environment of Ayodhya has sensed the loss of its King and the exile of Dharma (Rama).

यहाँ प्रकृति भरत के विषाद में सहभागी बन रही है। पेड़ों से पत्ते गिरना (स्रस्तपर्णैः) सामान्यतः पतझड़ या सूखे का संकेत है, लेकिन भरत को लगता है कि वृक्ष अपने पत्ते गिराकर 'विक्रोश' (चीत्कार/रोना) कर रहे हैं। यह दृश्य अत्यंत मार्मिक है। केवल मनुष्य ही नहीं, बल्कि 'मृग-पक्षी' (पशु और पक्षी) भी मौन हैं। पशु-पक्षियों का चुप हो जाना अक्सर बड़े तूफान या खतरे का प्राकृतिक संकेत माना जाता है। भरत की यह अनुभूति—कि प्रकृति भी रो रही है—दशरथ की मृत्यु और राम के वनवास के कारण अयोध्या पर छाई 'श्री-हीनता' (शोभा का नाश) को दर्शाती है।
