निमित्तानि अमनोज्ञानि तेन सीदति ते मनः ।
सर्वथा कुशलम् सूत दुर्लभम् मम बन्धुषु ॥ ॥२-७१-३१॥
Nimittāni amanojñāni tena sīdati te manaḥ |
Sarvathā kuśalam sūta durlabham mama bandhuṣu ॥2-71-31॥
Translation
Because of these unpleasant omens, my mind is sinking. O Suta (Charioteer)! I feel that the complete well-being of my kinsmen is rare (unlikely) indeed.

(इन) मन को न भाने वाले अपशकुनों के कारण मेरा मन बैठ रहा है (दुखी हो रहा है)। हे सूत! मुझे लगता है कि मेरे भाई-बंधुओं (परिजनों) का सब प्रकार से कुशल होना अब दुर्लभ ही है।
English Commentary
Bharata concludes his observations with a heavy heart. He confesses to the charioteer that these "unpleasant omens" (nimittani amanojnani) are causing his mind to sink (sidati) into depression and anxiety. He vocalizes his worst fear: that safety and well-being (kushalam) are now "rare" or unlikely for his kinsmen. This is a moment of profound vulnerability. Despite not knowing the specific facts (that his father is dead and brother exiled), his intuition has correctly grasped the gravity of the situation. This verse sets the emotional stage for the heartbreaking news that awaits him upon entering the palace.

इस सर्ग के (और भरत के विलाप के) इस खंड का समापन भरत की स्वीकारोक्ति के साथ होता है—'सीदति मे मनः' (मेरा मन बैठ रहा है/अवसाद में जा रहा है)। वे सारथी से कहते हैं कि इन अपशकुनों को देखकर उन्हें विश्वास हो गया है कि उनके परिवार में सब कुछ ठीक नहीं है। 'कुशलम् दुर्लभम्' (कुशलता दुर्लभ है) कहना एक राजकुमार के लिए बहुत बड़ी बात है, क्योंकि वे सदैव सकारात्मक रहने का प्रयास करते हैं। यह श्लोक दशरथ की मृत्यु और राम के वनवास के सत्य के उद्घाटन से ठीक पहले की मानसिक तैयारी है। भरत का अंतर्ज्ञान उन्हें उस सत्य के करीब ले आया है जिससे वे अभी तक अनजान थे।
