Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अशुभाशङ्कि हृदयम् शीलम् च पततीव मे ।
श्रुता नो यादृशाः पूर्वम् नृपतीनाम् विनाशने ॥ ॥२-७१-३६॥
Aśubhāśaṅki hṛdayam śīlam ca patatīva me । Śrutā no yādṛśāḥ pūrvam nṛpatīnām vināśane ॥ ॥2-71-36॥
Translation
My heart apprehends something inauspicious, and my composure seems to be collapsing. I observe signs similar to those we have heard occur during the demise of kings.

मेरा हृदय अशुभ की आशंका कर रहा है और मेरा स्वभाव (धैर्य) मानो गिर रहा है। मैं यहाँ वैसे ही अपशकुन देख रहा हूँ जैसे हमने पूर्व में राजाओं की मृत्यु के समय होने वाले सुने हैं।
English Commentary
Bharata is no longer just guessing; he is pattern-matching based on royal lore. He explicitly connects the eerie atmosphere to stories he has heard regarding the vināśane (destruction/death) of kings. The phrase 'my composure seems to be collapsing' indicates that the fortitude expected of a prince is crumbling under the weight of these omens. It is a moment of terrifying realization where the environment itself acts as a messenger of death before any human speaks the words.

भरत अब स्पष्ट शब्दों में अपनी आशंका व्यक्त करते हैं—'राजा की मृत्यु'। उन्होंने शास्त्रों या बुजुर्गों से सुना था कि जब किसी राजा का निधन होता है, तो प्रकृति और नगर में कैसे लक्षण दिखाई देते हैं। अयोध्या की वर्तमान स्थिति वैसी ही है। 'शीलम् च पततीव' का अर्थ है कि उनका जो स्वाभाविक धैर्य और गांभीर्य है, वह अब साथ छोड़ रहा है। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि भरत ने अनजाने में ही सही, लेकिन सत्य का अनुमान लगा लिया है।
