आकाराः तान् अहम् सर्वान् इह पश्यामि सारथे ।
सम्मार्जनविहीनानि परुषाण्युपलक्षये ॥ ॥२-७१-३७॥
Ākārāḥ tān aham sarvān iha paśyāmi sārathe । Sammārjanavihīnāni paruṣāṇyupalakṣaye ॥ ॥2-71-37॥
Translation
O Charioteer, I see all those signs here. I notice the houses are unswept, untended, and appear harsh and desolate.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सारथी! मैं यहाँ उन सभी लक्षणों (आकारों) को देख रहा हूँ। मैं देख रहा हूँ कि घर बुहारने (सफाई) से रहित हैं और बहुत रूखे (श्रीहीन) दिखाई दे रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Bharata begins pointing out specific physical evidence to support his fears. In Vedic culture, the daily sweeping and cleaning of the home entrance is a ritual of welcoming prosperity (Lakshmi). To see the houses sammārjana-vihīnāni (unswept) is a glaring sign of collective mourning. The use of the word paruṣāṇi (harsh/rough) suggests that without the loving touch of their inhabitants, the buildings themselves look uninviting and dead. The city has lost its warmth.

यहाँ से भरत अयोध्या की भौतिक स्थिति का वर्णन शुरू करते हैं। भारतीय संस्कृति में घर के सामने सफाई करना और उसे बुहारना शुभता का प्रतीक है। 'सम्मार्जनविहीनानि' (बिना बुहारे हुए) होना यह दर्शाता है कि लोगों ने अपने दैनिक कार्य छोड़ दिए हैं। जब घर में किसी की मृत्यु होती है या गहरा शोक होता है, तो सजावट और सफाई पर ध्यान नहीं दिया जाता। 'परुष' शब्द का अर्थ है कठोर या रूखा, जो नगर की कोमलता और सुंदरता के नष्ट होने का संकेत है।
