Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
असम्यतकवाटानि श्रीविहीनानि सर्वशः ।
बलिकर्मविहीनानि धूपसम्मेदनेन च ॥ ॥२-७१-३८॥
Asamyatakavāṭāni śrīvihīnāni sarvaśaḥ । Balikarmavihīnāni dhūpasammedanena ca ॥ ॥2-71-38॥
Translation
The doors are left unfastened (or unattended), and they are completely devoid of splendor. There are no daily sacrificial offerings (Bali) being performed, nor is there the fragrance of incense.
हिंदी अनुवाद
घरों के दरवाज़े खुले (या बेतरतीब) पड़े हैं, वे सब प्रकार से शोभा-हीन हो गए हैं। न तो वहाँ कोई बलि-कर्म (दैनिक पूजा/नैवेद्य) हो रहा है और न ही धूप-अगरबत्ती की सुगंध आ रही है।
English Commentary
The sensory details here are powerful. A thriving city appeals to the nose with dhūpa (incense) and to the eye with śrī (splendor). Both are missing. The cessation of balikarma (daily oblations) signifies a disruption in the cosmic order; the link between the people and the divine has been severed by grief. Open or unattended doors suggest a vulnerability and a lack of privacy, as if the sorrow is so universal that the boundaries of individual households no longer matter.

यह श्लोक धार्मिक और आध्यात्मिक शून्यता को दर्शाता है। एक समृद्ध नगर की पहचान है शाम के समय धूप की सुगंध और देवताओं को भोग (बलि) लगाना। इनका अभाव यह बताता है कि नगरवासी इतने दुखी हैं कि उन्होंने भगवान की पूजा भी रोक दी है। 'श्रीविहीनानि' का अर्थ है कि घरों से 'लक्ष्मी' या रौनक चली गई है। खुले और असुरक्षित दरवाज़े यह भी संकेत देते हैं कि लोगों को अब अपनी संपत्ति की सुरक्षा की भी चिंता नहीं है, क्योंकि उन्होंने अपना सबसे कीमती रत्न (राजा दशरथ/राम) खो दिया है।
