Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दृश्यन्ते वणिजोऽप्यद्य न यथापूर्वमत्रवै ।
ध्यानसम्विग्नहृदयाः नष्टव्यापारयन्त्रिताः ॥ ॥२-७१-४२॥
Dṛśyante vaṇijo'pyadya na yathāpūrvamatravai । Dhyānasamvignahṛdayāḥ naṣṭavyāpārayantritāḥ ॥ ॥2-71-42॥
Translation
Even the merchants here do not appear as they did before. With hearts agitated by anxious thought, they seem restrained, their trade having perished.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यहाँ के व्यापारी भी आज पहले जैसे नहीं दिखाई दे रहे हैं। वे चिंता से व्याकुल हृदय वाले और व्यापार नष्ट हो जाने से (दुख में) बंधे हुए से प्रतीत होते हैं।
English Commentary
The merchant class, usually driven by activity and profit, is frozen in sorrow. The word dhyāna here refers not to spiritual meditation, but to being lost in deep, worried thought. Their 'trade has perished' not because of lack of goods, but because the spirit of exchange is dead. They are described as yantritāḥ (restrained/constrained), implying they are held hostage by their grief, unable to function normally. This completes the picture of a society in total arrest.

एक नगर की रौनक उसके बाजारों और व्यापारियों से होती है। यहाँ व्यापारी 'ध्यान' (चिंता/गहरे सोच) में मग्न हैं, न कि लाभ-हानि की गणना में। 'नष्टव्यापार' का अर्थ है कि कारोबार ठप हो गया है। परन्तु यहाँ व्यापार रुकने का कारण आर्थिक मंदी नहीं, बल्कि भावनात्मक आघात है। वे 'यन्त्रिता' (जकड़े हुए या विवश) हैं। यह श्लोक बताता है कि अयोध्या का हर वर्ग—क्या पुजारी, क्या गृहस्थ, और क्या व्यापारी—सभी समान रूप से शोकाकुल हैं।
