मलिनम् च अश्रु पूर्ण अक्षम् दीनम् ध्यान परम् कृशम् ।
सस्त्री पुम्सम् च पश्यामि जनम् उत्कण्ठितम् पुरे ॥ ॥२-७१-४४॥
Malinam ca aśru pūrṇa akṣam dīnam dhyāna param kṛśam । Sastrī pumsam ca paśyāmi janam utkaṇṭhitam pure ॥ ॥2-71-44॥
Translation
I see the people in the city—both men and women—looking dirty/unkempt, with eyes full of tears, miserable, lost in deep thought, emaciated, and filled with anxiety.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं नगर के लोगों को—स्त्री और पुरुष दोनों को—मलिन (मैले-कुचैले), आंसुओं से भरी आँखों वाले, दीन, गहरी चिंता में मग्न, दुर्बल और व्याकुल देख रहा हूँ।
English Commentary
Bharata shifts his gaze from the architecture to the citizens. The description suggests a collective depression. People are malinam (unkempt), implying a neglect of personal hygiene which is a traditional sign of mourning. They are kṛśam (emaciated), suggesting they have not eaten properly in days. The phrase dhyāna param (lost in thought) conveys a heavy silence hanging over the crowd; they are not chatting or working, but are consumed by their internal grief. This validates Bharata's worst fears before he even steps into the palace.

भरत अब नगर के भौतिक ढांचे से हटकर वहां के निवासियों की दशा का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। 'मलिन' और 'कृश' (दुबला) होना यह दर्शाता है कि लोगों ने शारीरिक सुख और भोजन का त्याग कर दिया है। यह सामान्य शोक नहीं है, बल्कि एक सामूहिक 'उपवास' जैसा है। 'सस्त्री पुम्सम्' का अर्थ है कि यह दुख किसी एक वर्ग तक सीमित नहीं है; स्त्रियां और पुरुष समान रूप से आहत हैं। उनकी आँखों में आंसू और मन में 'उत्कंठा' (बेचैनी) है, जो उनके प्रिय राजा और राम के वियोग का परिणाम है।
