तच्छ्रुत्वा भरतो वाक्यं धर्माभिजनवान् शुचिः ।
पपात सहसा भूमौ पितृशोकबलार्दितः ॥२-७२-१६॥
tacchrutvā bharato vākyaṃ dharmābhijanavān śuciḥ |
papāta sahasā bhūmau pitṛśokabalārditaḥ ॥2-72-16॥
Translation
Hearing those words, Bharata, pure and born of a righteous lineage, suddenly fell to the ground, crushed by the force of grief for his father.

वह वाक्य सुनकर, धर्मनिष्ठ कुल में उत्पन्न पवित्र भरत, पिता के शोक के वेग से पीड़ित होकर सहसा (अचानक) पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े।
English Commentary
The impact of Kaikeyi's words is physical and devastating. Bharata, described as śuciḥ (pure) and of noble lineage (dharmābhijanavān), cannot withstand the news. The phrase pitṛśokabalārditaḥ (tormented by the power/force of grief for his father) suggests that sorrow struck him like a physical blow. He falls sahasā (suddenly) to the ground. This reaction highlights the depth of Bharata's love for Dasharatha. Unlike Kaikeyi, who stands unaffected, the righteous Bharata is physically crushed by the loss, illustrating the profound difference in their natures.

भरत की प्रतिक्रिया तत्काल और तीव्र है। 'तच्छ्रुत्वा... वाक्यं' (वह वाक्य सुनते ही) वे संभल नहीं पाए। वाल्मीकि जी उन्हें 'धर्माभिजनवान्' (धर्म और उच्च कुल से युक्त) और 'शुचिः' (पवित्र) कहते हैं, जो यह दर्शाता है कि उनका प्रेम और शोक दिखावा नहीं, बल्कि सात्विक और गहरा था। 'पितृशोकबलार्दितः' (पिता के शोक के बल/वेग से पीड़ित) होकर वे 'पपात' (गिर पड़े)। यह वज्रपात जैसा था। जिस पिता के चरणों को स्पर्श करने की कामना लेकर वे आए थे, उनके निधन का समाचार सुनते ही उनके शरीर ने साथ छोड़ दिया। यह शारीरिक पतन उनके मानसिक आघात का प्रतीक है।
