हा हतोऽस्मीति कृपणां दीनां वाचमुदीरयन् ।
निपपात महाबाहुर्बाहु विक्षिप्य वीर्यवान् ॥२-७२-१७॥
hā hato'smīti kṛpaṇāṃ dīnāṃ vācamudīrayan |
nipapāta mahābāhurbāhu vikṣipya vīryavān ॥2-72-17॥
Translation
"Alas, I am slain!"—uttering these piteous and wretched words, the mighty-armed and valiant hero fell down, flailing his arms.

"हा! मैं मारा गया!"—ऐसी करुण और दीन वाणी बोलते हुए, वे महाबाहु और वीर (भरत) अपनी भुजाओं को फैलाकर (पछाड़ खाकर) गिर पड़े।
English Commentary
Bharata's cry, "Ha hato'smi" (Alas, I am dead/ruined), signifies that without his father, he feels his own existence is destroyed. Despite being vīryavān (valiant) and mahābāhuḥ (mighty-armed)—epithets usually reserved for warriors in battle—he is rendered helpless by grief. The image of him flailing his arms (bāhu vikṣipya) and collapsing captures the raw, uncontrollable nature of his sorrow. It demonstrates that even the strongest heroes are vulnerable to the anguish of personal loss. The news has stripped him of his warrior composure, leaving him in a state of wretchedness (dīnāṃ).

भरत जैसा 'वीर्यवान्' (वीर) योद्धा भी पिता की मृत्यु के समाचार से टूट जाता है। 'हा हतोऽस्मीति' (हाय! मैं मारा गया/बर्बाद हो गया) - यह उद्गार बताता है कि पिता की मृत्यु को वे अपने जीवन का अंत मानते हैं। 'महाबाहुः' (विशाल भुजाओं वाले) विशेषण का प्रयोग यहाँ उनकी शारीरिक शक्ति और वर्तमान लाचारी के विरोधाभास को दिखाने के लिए किया गया है। वे भुजाएं जो शत्रुओं का संहार कर सकती थीं, अब केवल शोक में 'विक्षिप्य' (फैलकर/पटककर) रह गई हैं। उनका गिरना किसी साधारण मनुष्य का गिरना नहीं, बल्कि एक शक्तिशाली राजकुमार का शोक के सागर में डूबना है।
