एतत्सुरुचिरं भाति पितुर्मे शयनं पुरा ।
शशिनेवामलं रात्रौ गगनं तोयदात्यये ॥२-७२-१९॥
etatsuruciraṃ bhāti piturme śayanaṃ purā |
śaśinevāmalaṃ rātrau gaganaṃ toyadātyaye ॥2-72-19॥
Translation
"This bed of my father used to shine so beautifully in the past, like the cloudless sky at night adorned by the moon after the rainy season has passed."

"मेरे पिता का यह शयन (पलंग/आसन) पहले ऐसा सुंदर सुशोभित होता था, जैसे वर्षा ऋतु के बीत जाने पर रात्रि में चन्द्रमा से निर्मल आकाश सुशोभित होता है।"
English Commentary
Bharata looks at the empty bed and recalls its former glory. He uses a simile involving nature: comparing the occupied bed to the gaganaṃ (sky) at night during toyadātyaye (the end of the rainy season/autumn), illuminated by the śaśinā (moon). In Indian poetry, the autumn moon is considered the most beautiful and clear. Dasharatha was the moon that gave luster to the "sky" of the palace. This comparison highlights how the King’s presence was not just authoritative but beautifying and essential for the vibrancy of the household. It underscores the void Bharata now perceives.

विलाप करते हुए भरत की दृष्टि उस खाली पलंग पर जाती है। वे अतीत की स्मृति करते हैं। 'पुरा' (पहले) यह स्थान 'सुरुचिरं भाति' (अत्यंत सुंदर लगता था)। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ एक अद्भुत उपमा दी है: दशरथ की उपस्थिति में वह पलंग 'तोयदात्यये' (वर्षा ऋतु के अंत/शरद ऋतु) के 'गगनं' (आकाश) जैसा लगता था जो 'शशिना' (चन्द्रमा) से युक्त हो। राजा दशरथ चन्द्रमा थे और वह शय्या आकाश। जैसे चन्द्रमा के बिना आकाश सुना है, वैसे ही राजा के बिना यह राजसी पलंग। यह उपमा दशरथ के सौम्य और आह्लादक व्यक्तित्व को भी रेखांकित करती है।
