Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अम्ब केनात्यगाद्राजा व्याधिना मय्यनागते ।
धन्या रामादयः सर्वे यैः पिता संस्कृतः स्वयम् ॥२-७२-२९॥
amba kenātyagādrājā vyādhinā mayyanāgate |
dhanyā rāmādayaḥ sarve yaiḥ pitā saṃskṛtaḥ svayam ॥2-72-29॥
Translation
"O Mother, by what illness did the King pass away before I arrived? Blessed are Rama and all others who personally performed the father's funeral rites."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे माँ! मेरे आने से पहले राजा किस व्याधि (रोग) से दिवंगत हुए? राम आदि वे सब भाई धन्य हैं, जिन्होंने स्वयं पिता का संस्कार (दाह-संस्कार) किया।"
English Commentary
Bharata asks the practical question: kena vyādhinā (by what illness/disease)? He assumes a natural cause, unaware that the "illness" was grief caused by the woman standing before him. He then expresses envy of his brothers, particularly Rama, calling them dhanyā (blessed/fortunate) for having performed the saṃskṛtaḥ (funeral rites/samskaras). In Vedic tradition, performing the antiyeṣṭi (last rites) is the final service a son renders to his father. Bharata feels deprived of this spiritual privilege, mistakenly assuming Rama was present to fulfill this duty.

भरत मृत्यु का कारण पूछते हैं—'केन व्याधिना' (किस रोग से)? उन्हें लगता है कि यह सामान्य वृद्धावस्था या बीमारी से हुई मृत्यु है। यह प्रश्न कैकेयी के लिए उत्तर देना कठिन बना देता है क्योंकि 'रोग' मानसिक आघात था जो स्वयं कैकेयी ने दिया था। इसके बाद भरत 'धन्या रामादयः' (राम आदि धन्य हैं) कहते हैं। हिंदू धर्म में पुत्र द्वारा पिता का अंतिम संस्कार करना अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है। भरत को दुःख है कि वे इस अंतिम कर्तव्य से वंचित रह गए। वे मान रहे हैं कि राम ने यह कर्तव्य पूरा किया होगा, जो उनकी अज्ञानता को और गहरा करता है (क्योंकि राम तो वन में हैं)।
