Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न नूनं मां महाराजः प्राप्तं जानाति कीर्तिमान् ।
उपजिघ्रेद्धि मां मूर्ध्नि तातः संनम्य सत्वरम् ॥२-७२-३०॥
na nūnaṃ māṃ mahārājaḥ prāptaṃ jānāti kīrtimān |
upajighreddhi māṃ mūrdhni tātaḥ saṃnamya satvaram ॥2-72-30॥
Translation
"Surely the illustrious Monarch did not know of my arrival; otherwise, the father would have bent down and smelled my head (affectionately) at once."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"निश्चय ही कीर्तिमान महाराज को मेरे आने का पता नहीं चला (अंतिम समय में), अन्यथा पिता झुककर शीघ्र ही मेरा मस्तक सूंघते (प्यार करते)।"
English Commentary
Bharata speaks with heartbreaking innocence. He believes that had the Kīrtimān (illustrious) King known of his arrival, he would have defied death to greet him. He uses the phrase upajighret hi māṃ mūrdhni (would have surely smelled my head), reiterating the traditional gesture of blessing and love. Bharata is trying to reconcile the cold reality of death with the warm memory of his father's affection, convinced that his father's love for him was active until the very end.

यह श्लोक भरत की बाल-सुलभ भावनाओं को दर्शाता है। वे कल्पना करते हैं कि यदि पिता की आत्मा को पता होता कि भरत आ गया है, तो वे मृत्यु के बाद भी, या अंतिम क्षणों में, उसे प्यार किए बिना नहीं रहते। 'उपजिघ्रेद्धि मां मूर्ध्नि' (सिर सूंघना) वात्सल्य का वही प्रतीक है जो पहले कैकेयी के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ था। भरत को विश्वास है कि पिता का प्रेम मृत्यु की सीमाओं को भी लांघ सकता था। यह कथन दशरथ और भरत के बीच के गहरे प्रेम को रेखांकित करता है।
