पिता हि भवति ज्येष्ठो धर्ममार्यस्य जानतः ।
तस्य पादौ ग्रहीष्यामि स हीदानीं गतिर्मम ॥२-७२-३३॥
pitā hi bhavati jyeṣṭho dharmamāryasya jānataḥ |
tasya pādau grahīṣyāmi sa hīdānīṃ gatirmama ॥2-72-33॥
Translation
"For one who knows the Dharma of the noble, the eldest brother is indeed the father. I shall clasp his feet, for he is now my refuge."

"आर्य (कुलीन) पुरुषों का धर्म जानने वाले व्यक्ति के लिए ज्येष्ठ भ्राता पिता के समान होता है। मैं उन्हीं के चरण पकड़ूँगा, क्योंकि अब वे ही मेरे आश्रय (गति) हैं।"
English Commentary
Bharata elucidates the Dharmic principle guiding his actions: pitā hi bhavati jyeṣṭho (the eldest is indeed the father). By citing the code of the Ārya (noble/righteous), he affirms that his subservience to Rama is not just personal love but moral duty. He declares Rama as his gati (refuge/ultimate resort). This assertion of Rama's authority completely nullifies Kaikeyi's ambition before she has even fully revealed it. Bharata is mentally preparing to serve Rama, not to replace him.

भरत अपने निर्णय का धार्मिक आधार देते हैं। 'पिता हि भवति ज्येष्ठो'—धर्मशास्त्र के अनुसार, पिता के बाद बड़ा भाई पिता तुल्य होता है। भरत 'धर्ममार्यस्य जानतः' (आर्यों का धर्म जानने वाले) हैं, इसलिए वे इस मर्यादा का उल्लंघन नहीं कर सकते। 'स हीदानीं गतिर्मम' (वही अब मेरी गति/सहारा हैं)—यह वाक्य स्पष्ट करता है कि भरत राज्य का भार नहीं उठाना चाहते, बल्कि राम के संरक्षण में रहना चाहते हैं। वे राम के 'पादौ ग्रहीष्यामि' (चरण पकड़ेंगे), जो समर्पण का प्रतीक है।
