धर्मविद्धर्मनित्यश्च सत्यसन्धो दृढव्रतः ।
आर्ये किमब्रवीद्राजा पिता मे सत्यविक्रमः ॥२-७२-३४॥
dharmaviddharmanityaśca satyasandho dṛḍhavrataḥ |
ārye kimabravīdrājā pitā me satyavikramaḥ ॥2-72-34॥
Translation
"O Noble Lady! What did the King, my father—who knew Dharma, was ever devoted to Dharma, true to his promise, firm in vows, and of true valor—say?"

"हे आर्ये (माता)! धर्म को जानने वाले, नित्य धर्म में स्थित, सत्य प्रतिज्ञा वाले और दृढ़ व्रत वाले मेरे सत्य-पराक्रमी पिता राजा ने क्या कहा था?"
English Commentary
Before rushing to Rama, Bharata pauses to ask for the King’s final message. He heaps attributes upon Dasharatha: dharmavit (knower of Dharma), satyasandhaḥ (bound to truth), dṛḍhavrataḥ (firm in vows). These epithets are painfully ironic, as it was precisely his rigid adherence to his truthful promise to Kaikeyi that killed him. Bharata addresses Kaikeyi respectfully as Ārye, maintaining protocol, and asks kim abravīd rājā (what did the King say?), seeking closure through his father's last words.

राम के पास जाने से पहले, भरत पिता के अंतिम शब्दों को जानना चाहते हैं। वे दशरथ के लिए अनेक विशेषणों का प्रयोग करते हैं: 'धर्मवित्' (धर्मज्ञ), 'सत्यसन्धो' (सत्यनिष्ठ)। विडंबना यह है कि दशरथ की यही 'सत्यनिष्ठा' (कैकेयी को दिए वरदान) उनकी मृत्यु का कारण बनी। भरत कैकेयी को 'आर्ये' (आदरणीय महिला) कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो उनकी शिष्टता को दर्शाता है, भले ही वे दुखी हैं। वे जानना चाहते हैं कि क्या पिता ने उनके लिए कोई विशेष संदेश छोड़ा है।
