Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत् श्रुत्वा विषसाद एव द्वितीया प्रिय शम्सनात् ।
विषण्ण वदनो भूत्वा भूयः पप्रच्च मातरम् ॥२-७२-३९॥
Tat śrutvā viṣasāda eva dvitīyā priya śamsanāt । Viṣaṇṇa vadano bhūtvā bhūyaḥ papracca mātaram ॥ ॥2-72-39॥
Translation
Hearing that news, which was narrated as if it were pleasant (though it was tragic), he became even more dejected. With a sorrowful face, he asked his mother again.

उस (अप्रिय) समाचार को सुनकर, जो (कैकेयी द्वारा) प्रिय समाचार की तरह सुनाया गया था, भरत और भी दुखी हो गए। उदास मुख होकर उन्होंने पुनः अपनी माता से पूछा।
English Commentary
Bharata receives a double blow here. The phrase 'Dvitiya apriya shamsanat' implies a second unpleasant revelation follows the first (death). Kaikeyi delivers this tragic news with an alarming casualness, or perhaps thinking she acts in Bharata's favor, which the poet describes ironically. Bharata, perceptive and sensitive, detects the tragedy hidden in her calm narration. His 'Vishanna vadana' (dejected face) marks the transition from grief for his father to anxiety about his brother.

यहाँ 'द्वितीय अप्रिय शंसनात्' का भाव है कि भरत को दोहरे आघात लगे। पहला पिता की मृत्यु, और दूसरा राम का वियोग (जो दशरथ के अंतिम शब्दों से ध्वनित हुआ)। कैकेयी ने यह बात ऐसे कही मानो राम का जाना कोई सामान्य घटना हो, जिसे वाल्मीकि ने व्यंग्यात्मक रूप से 'प्रिय शंसनात्' (प्रिय निवेदन की तरह) कहा है। भरत का विषाद गहराता जा रहा है क्योंकि उन्हें स्थिति की गंभीरता और अपनी माता की निष्ठुरता का आभास होने लगा है।
