तथा पृष्टा यथा तत्त्वम् आख्यातुम् उपचक्रमे ।
माता अस्य युगपद् वाक्यम् विप्रियम् प्रिय शन्कया ॥२-७२-४१॥
Tathā pṛṣṭā yathā tattvam ākhyātum upacakrame । Mātā asya yugapad vākyam vipriyam priya śankayā ॥ ॥2-72-41॥
Translation
Thus questioned, his mother began to narrate the facts exactly as they were. She spoke the unpleasant words, mistakenly believing them to be pleasant (beneficial for Bharata).
हिंदी अनुवाद
इस प्रकार पूछे जाने पर उनकी माता (कैकेयी) ने यथार्थ (सच्ची) बात कहना आरम्भ किया। वह उस अप्रिय समाचार को भी प्रिय मानकर (अपने पुत्र के हित की दृष्टि से) कहने लगीं।
English Commentary
This verse is crucial for understanding Kaikeyi's psychology at this moment. The phrase 'Vipriyam priya shankaya' (unpleasant spoken with the belief/hope of it being pleasant) reveals her delusion. She genuinely believes she has secured Bharata's future and that he will receive the news of his rival's removal with joy. It sets the stage for the dramatic conflict, as she is utterly out of touch with her son's values.

यह श्लोक कैकेयी के मानसिक भ्रम (मोह) को उजागर करता है। वाल्मीकि लिखते हैं 'विप्रियम् प्रिय शंकया'—अर्थात् जो वास्तव में अत्यंत अप्रिय और कठोर सत्य है, उसे कैकेयी अपने पुत्र के लिए 'प्रिय' मान रही हैं। उन्हें लगता है कि राम का वन जाना भरत के लिए राज्य प्राप्ति का मार्ग प्रशस्त करेगा, इसलिए यह 'शुभ' समाचार है। यह भरत के सात्विक स्वभाव और कैकेयी की राजसी महत्वाकांक्षा के बीच के विशाल अंतर को स्पष्ट करता है।
