Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कच्चिन् न पर दारान् वा राज पुत्रः अभिमन्यते ।
कस्मात् स दण्डक अरण्ये भ्रूणहा इव विवासितः ॥२-७२-४५॥
Kaccin na para dārān vā rāja putraḥ abhimanyate । Kasmāt sa daṇḍaka araṇye bhrūṇahā iva vivāsitaḥ ॥ ॥2-72-45॥
Translation
'Did the Prince covet another man's wife? For what reason has he been banished to the Dandaka forest like an embryo-killer (a heinous sinner)?'

क्या उस राजपुत्र ने किसी पराई स्त्री पर कुदृष्टि डाली है? किस कारण से उन्हें 'भ्रूणहा' (गर्भस्थ शिशु की हत्या करने वाले महापापी) की भाँति दंडक वन में निर्वासित किया गया है?
English Commentary
Bharata uses a severe simile here: 'Bhrunaha iva' (like a killer of an embryo/fetus). In the Dharmashastras, this is a grievous sin resulting in immediate social ostracization. Bharata asks if Rama coveted another's wife ('Para daran'), another grave offense. By comparing Rama's punishment to that of such a sinner, Bharata underscores the disproportionate and shocking nature of the exile, demanding a valid justification.

यहाँ भरत 'भ्रूणहा' (भ्रूण हत्यारा) की उपमा देते हैं। शास्त्रों में भ्रूण हत्या को ब्रह्महत्या के समान महापाप माना गया है, जिसका प्रायश्चित समाज से बहिष्कार और वनवास ही होता था। भरत हैरान हैं कि राम को इतना कठोर दंड क्यों मिला, जैसे वे कोई जघन्य अपराधी हों। परस्त्रीगमन (पर दारान् अभिमन्यते) भी राजा के लिए घोर पतन का कारण होता है। भरत अपनी माँ से कारण जानना चाहते हैं क्योंकि राम का चरित्र इन दोषों से मुक्त है।
