अद्य ते कतिचिद्रात्र्यश्च्युतस्यार्यकवेश्मनः ।
अपि नाध्वश्रमः शीघ्रं रथेनापततस्तव ॥२-७२-५॥
adya te katicidrātryaścyutasyāryakaveśmanaḥ |
api nādhvaśramaḥ śīghraṃ rathenāpatatastava ॥2-72-5॥
Translation
(Kaikeyi asked) "How many nights have passed since you left your grandfather's house? Are you not fatigued from traveling quickly by chariot?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
(कैकेयी ने पूछा) "अपने नाना के घर से चले तुम्हें आज कितनी रातें हो गई हैं? शीघ्रगामी रथ से आते हुए तुम्हें मार्ग की थकान तो नहीं हुई?"
English Commentary
Kaikeyi initiates the conversation with standard queries regarding travel and well-being. She refers to her father's house as āryaka veśmanaḥ (the noble elder's house). Her question regarding the number of nights helps establish the timeline of the narrative. Her concern about adhvaśramaḥ (travel fatigue) from the fast chariot ride indicates her focus on his physical comfort. This creates a suspenseful pause in the narrative; while Bharata is desperate to know about his father, Kaikeyi is engaged in pleasantries, completely oblivious to the storm of grief and anger that is about to erupt once the truth is revealed.
