पुत्रशोकपरिद्यूनः पञ्चत्वमुपपेदिवान् ।
त्वया त्विदानीं धर्मज्ञ राजत्वमवलम्ब्यताम् ॥२-७२-५२॥
putraśokaparidyūnaḥ pañcatvamupapedivān । tvayā tvidānīṃ dharmajña rājatvamavalambyatām ॥2-72-52॥
Translation
...withered by grief for his son, attained the five elements (died). But now, O Knower of Dharma, the kingship must be upheld by you.

...पुत्र के शोक से संतप्त होकर पंचत्व (मृत्यु) को प्राप्त हो गए। हे धर्मज्ञ! अब तुम राजत्व (राज्य) को संभालो।
English Commentary
Kaikeyi delivers the fatal news with startling abruptness. She confirms that the King has "attained the five elements" (died), explicitly citing "putra śoka" (grief for his son) as the cause. However, her transition from tragedy to opportunity is immediate and jarring. In the very same breath, she urges Bharata to take up the "rājatvam" (kingship). By addressing him as "Dharmajña" (Knower of Dharma), she tries to manipulate his sense of duty, implying that the righteous path now is to assume the throne left vacant by his father. She completely misreads Bharata's character, expecting him to prioritize political succession over personal grief. The juxtaposition of the father's death and the call to rule highlights Kaikeyi's single-minded ambition, where the King's demise is treated as a mere logistical hurdle that has now been cleared for Bharata's rise.

इस श्लोक में कैकेयी वज्रपात जैसा समाचार देती हैं। 'पञ्चत्वमुपपेदिवान' का अर्थ है मृत्यु को प्राप्त होना (शरीर का पांच तत्वों में विलीन होना)। वह स्पष्ट करती हैं कि मृत्यु का कारण 'पुत्रशोक' था। किंतु, कैकेयी की निष्ठुरता यहाँ चरम पर है; वह एक ही श्लोक में पिता की मृत्यु की सूचना देती हैं और तुरंत बाद भरत को राज्य संभालने का आदेश देती हैं। वह भरत को 'धर्मज्ञ' (धर्म का ज्ञाता) कहकर संबोधित करती हैं, यह तर्क देते हुए कि अब पिता का वचन निभाना और राज्य को अराजाकता से बचाना ही उनका धर्म है। कैकेयी को लगता है कि पिता की मृत्यु एक आवश्यक मूल्य था जो चुका दिया गया है, और अब लक्ष्य (सिंहासन) प्राप्त कर लेना चाहिए। वह भरत की मानसिक स्थिति को समझने में पूरी तरह असफल रहती हैं, जो पिता की मृत्यु और भाई के वनवास के समाचार से टूट चुके हैं।
