यन्मे धनं च रत्नं च ददौ राजा परंतपः ।
परिश्रान्तं पथ्यभवत्ततोऽहं पूर्वमागतः ॥२-७२-९॥
yanme dhanaṃ ca ratnaṃ ca dadau rājā paraṃtapaḥ |
pariśrāntaṃ pathyabhavattato'haṃ pūrvamāgataḥ ॥2-72-9॥
Translation
"The wealth and gems that the enemy-scorching King gave me—the carriers of those became exhausted on the road; therefore, I came ahead first."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"शत्रुओं को संताप देने वाले राजा (नाना) ने मुझे जो धन और रत्न दिए थे, वे (उन्हें ढोने वाले वाहन) मार्ग में थक गए, इसलिए मैं (उन्हें पीछे छोड़कर) पहले आ गया हूँ।"
English Commentary
Bharata explains the logistics of his journey. The epithet paraṃtapaḥ (scorcher of enemies) refers to his grandfather, King Ashwapati, who gifted him dhanam (wealth) and ratnam (gems). Bharata explains that the transport of these heavy gifts slowed the caravan (pariśrāntaṃ pathi - exhausted on the road). His decision to leave the entourage behind and surge ahead (pūrvamāgataḥ) reinforces his anxiety. He prioritized reaching Ayodhya over the security of his wealth, driven by the foreboding feeling that something was wrong at home.

भरत स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वे अकेले और इतनी जल्दी आए। उनके नाना (यहाँ 'राजा परंतपः' अश्वपति के लिए प्रयुक्त है) ने विदाई में प्रचुर धन-संपदा दी थी। भारी सामान के साथ यात्रा धीमी होती है ('परिश्रान्तं पथि'), इसलिए भरत उस काफिले को पीछे छोड़कर तीव्र गति से आगे निकल आए। यह कथन दूतों द्वारा दिए गए अस्पष्ट संदेशों से उत्पन्न उनकी आंतरिक घबराहट को भी परोक्ष रूप से व्यक्त करता है—उन्हें घर पहुँचने की इतनी जल्दी थी कि उन्होंने उपहारों और सेना की परवाह नहीं की।
