Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
लुब्धाया विदितो मन्ये न तेऽहं राघवं प्रति ।
तथाह्यनर्थो राज्यार्थं त्वया नीतो महानयम् ॥२-७३-१३॥
lubdhāyā vidito manye na te'haṃ rāghavaṃ prati । tathāhyanartho rājyārthaṃ tvayā nīto mahānayam ॥2-73-13॥
Translation
I think that being greedy, you did not know my feelings towards Raghava (Rama). That is why, for the sake of the kingdom, this great calamity has been brought about by you.

मुझे लगता है कि (राज्य की) लोभी होने के कारण तुम्हें यह ज्ञात नहीं था कि मेरा राघव (राम) के प्रति कैसा भाव है। इसीलिए राज्य के लिए तुमने यह महान अनर्थ किया है।
English Commentary
Bharata diagnoses the root of the tragedy: Kaikeyi's ignorance of her own son's heart, driven by her greed ("lubdhāyā"). He states, "You did not know me regarding Raghava." Kaikeyi assumed Bharata shared her ambition for power. Bharata corrects this fatal error, declaring his devotion to Rama is paramount. Because of this miscalculation, she committed this "mahān anartho" (great disaster/calamity) for the sake of the kingdom ("rājyārthaṃ"). Bharata distances himself from the motive of the crime. He is telling her: "You did this for me, but you don't know me at all." It is a profound rejection of her motherhood and her understanding of him.

यह श्लोक भरत की अस्वीकृति का मूल है। वह कहते हैं कि कैकेयी 'लुब्धा' (लोभी) है और इसी लोभ ने उसकी बुद्धि को ढक दिया था। वह यह नहीं जान पाईं कि भरत राम से कितना प्रेम करते हैं ('न तेऽहं राघवं प्रति विदितः')। कैकेयी ने सोचा था कि भरत राज्य पाकर खुश होंगे, जो उनकी सबसे बड़ी भूल थी। भरत इसे 'महान अनर्थ' (महान आपदा/पाप) कहते हैं जो केवल 'राज्यार्थं' (राज्य के लिए) किया गया। भरत स्पष्ट करते हैं कि उनकी निष्ठा राम के चरणों में है, न कि अयोध्या के सिंहासन में। माँ ने बेटे के स्वभाव को पहचाने बिना ही उसके नाम पर इतना बड़ा जुआ खेला और हार गई।
