Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न मे विकाङ्क्षा जायेत त्यक्तुं त्वां पापनिश्चयाम् ।
यदि रामस्य नावेक्षा त्वयि स्यान्मातृवत्सदा ॥२-७३-१८॥
na me vikāṅkṣā jāyeta tyaktuṃ tvāṃ pāpaniścayām । yadi rāmasya nāvekṣā tvayi syānmātṛvatsadā ॥2-73-18॥
Translation
No hesitation would arise in me to abandon you, O woman of sinful resolve, were it not for the regard Rama always has for you as a mother.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि राम की दृष्टि तुम पर सदा माता के समान न रहती, तो मुझमें तुम्हें त्याग देने में कोई हिचकिचाहट न होती, हे पापनिश्चय वाली!
English Commentary
Bharata reveals the only reason he spares Kaikeyi. He admits he has no "vikāṅkṣā" (hesitation) to abandon or disown her, given her "pāpa-niścayām" (sinful resolve). The impulse to cast her out is strong. However, he is restrained by Rama's example. He cites "Rāmasya avekṣā" (Rama's regard/consideration) for her as a mother. Because Rama still honors her status as a mother despite her actions, Bharata feels bound to do the same to honor Rama. Ironically, the very son Kaikeyi banished (Rama) is the reason she is not being disowned by the son she sought to crown (Bharata). Bharata submits to Rama's higher moral standard, even while despising his mother's actions.

इस सर्ग के समापन की ओर बढ़ते हुए भरत अपनी विवशता बताते हैं। वह कैकेयी को 'पापनिश्चयाम्' (पाप का निश्चय करने वाली) कहते हैं और स्वीकार करते हैं कि वह उन्हें उसी क्षण त्याग देना चाहते हैं। परन्तु, उन्हें केवल एक बात रोक रही है—'रामस्य अवेक्षा' (राम का आदर/दृष्टि)। राम कैकेयी को सदैव माँ मानते हैं। यदि भरत ने अपनी माँ का त्याग किया या उन्हें दंड दिया, तो यह राम के आदर्शों के विरुद्ध होगा। राम का धर्म ही कैकेयी का कवच है। भरत अपने क्रोध को केवल इसलिए पी रहे हैं क्योंकि वह अपने भाई का सम्मान करते हैं। यह श्लोक भरत के आंतरिक संघर्ष को दिखाता है—धर्मयुद्ध और मातृभक्ति के बीच फँसा हुआ एक पुत्र।
