अधस्तात् व्रजतः तस्याः सुर राज्ञो महात्मनः ।
बिन्दवः पतिता गात्रे सूक्ष्माः सुरभि गन्धिनः ॥ ॥२-७४-१७॥
adhastāt vrajataḥ tasyāḥ surarājño mahātmanaḥ |
bindavaḥ patitā gātre sūkṣmāḥ surabhigandhinaḥ ॥2-74-17॥
Translation
Subtle, fragrant drops fell upon the body of the high-souled King of Gods (Indra), who was passing below her.

उस समय नीचे से गुजरते हुए महात्मा देवराज इन्द्र के शरीर पर (सुरभि के आंसुओं की) सुगन्धित और सूक्ष्म बूँदें गिरीं।
English Commentary
This verse creates a spatial dynamic where Surabhi is positioned above Indra. As the King of Gods passes below, her tears fall upon him. Crucially, these are described as surabhigandhinaḥ (fragrant like Surabhi/perfumed). This detail preserves the divine nature of Surabhi even in her sorrow; her grief manifests physically but retains a celestial quality. The commentary observes the symbolism: the grief of the nurturing force (Mother Nature/Cow) physically touches the ruling force (Indra). It implies that the ruler cannot remain untouched by the sorrow of the subjects, represented here by the mother's tears landing directly on his body.

यह श्लोक एक अद्भुत दृश्य प्रस्तुत करता है जहाँ स्वर्ग और पृथ्वी के बीच का अंतर कम हो जाता है। सुरभि आकाश में स्थित हैं और इन्द्र नीचे हैं। सुरभि के आँसू साधारण खारा पानी नहीं हैं; वे 'सुरभि गन्धिनः' (सुगन्धित) हैं, जो उनकी दिव्यता को प्रमाणित करते हैं। इन्द्र को 'महात्मनः' कहा गया है, जो यह सूचक है कि वे इन आंसुओं के महत्व को समझने में सक्षम हैं। यह घटना संकेत देती है कि जब एक माँ रोती है, तो उसका प्रभाव शासक (इन्द्र) तक अवश्य पहुँचता है। सुगन्धित आंसुओं का गिरना एक विरोधाभास है—दुख में भी दिव्यता की उपस्थिति।
