इन्द्रोऽप्यश्रुनिपातम् तम् स्वगात्रे पुण्यगन्धिनम् ।
सुरभिम् मन्यते दृष्ट्वा भूयसीम् ताम् सुरेश्वरः ॥ ॥२-७४-१८॥
indro'pyaśrunipātam tam svagātre puṇyagandhinam |
surabhim manyate dṛṣṭvā bhūyasīm tām sureśvaraḥ ॥2-74-18॥
Translation
Indra, the Lord of Gods, feeling the fall of those sacred, fragrant tears on his body, inferred that it must be the great Surabhi.

अपने शरीर पर गिरे उन पवित्र सुगन्ध वाले आंसुओं को देखकर सुरेश्वर इन्द्र ने माना (अनुमान लगाया) कि यह श्रेष्ठ सुरभि ही हैं।
English Commentary
Indra identifies the source of the drops not by sight initially, but by their specific quality—puṇyagandhinam (sacred fragrance). He recognizes that such distinctive, holy tears could only belong to Surabhi, the matriarch of bovines. The use of the word bhūyasīm (great/illustrious) indicates the high esteem in which Indra holds her. The commentary suggests that this verse highlights the connection between celestial beings; they recognize each other through subtle signs. It also serves as a transition, moving Indra from a passive traveler to an active inquirer into the cause of this divine sorrow.
