भयम् कच्चिन् न च अस्मासु कुतश्चित् विद्यते महत् ।
कुतः निमित्तः शोकः ते ब्रूहि सर्व हित एषिणि ॥ ॥२-७४-२१॥
bhayam kaccin na cāsmāsu kutaścit vidyate mahat |
kuto nimittaḥ śokaḥ te brūhi sarvahiteṣiṇi ॥2-74-21॥
Translation
"O well-wisher of all! Is there any great danger befalling us from any quarter? What is the cause of your grief? Please tell me."

"हे सबका हित चाहने वाली देवी! कहीं हम (देवताओं) पर किसी ओर से कोई बड़ा भय (संकट) तो नहीं आया है? आपके इस शोक का क्या कारण है, कृपया बताएँ।"
English Commentary
Indra addresses Surabhi as sarvahiteṣiṇi (one who desires the good of all). His immediate fear is that her tears are a portent of cosmic catastrophe or a threat to the gods (asmāsu... bhayam). The commentary explains that in the mythological worldview, the distress of Mother Earth or the Divine Cow often precedes the rise of demonic forces or universal imbalance. Indra asks for the nimitta (cause/sign), expecting a political or martial threat, unaware that the cause is deeply personal and emotional.

इन्द्र का प्रश्न उनकी असुरक्षा और जिम्मेदारी को दर्शाता है। जब सुरभि जैसी 'सर्वहितैषिणी' (सबका भला चाहने वाली) रोती हैं, तो राजा को लगता है कि राज्य (स्वर्ग/ब्रह्मांड) पर कोई विपत्ति आने वाली है। इन्द्र का ध्यान पहले 'अस्मासु' (हम पर/देवताओं पर) केंद्रित है, जो स्वाभाविक राजसी प्रवृत्ति है—वे व्यक्तिगत दुख को ब्रह्मांडीय संकेत मान रहे हैं। यह श्लोक राजा के कर्तव्यबोध को भी रेखांकित करता है, जो किसी भी अपशकुन का मूल कारण जानने को उत्सुक रहता है।
