Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पुत्रैः दारैः च भृत्यैः च स्व गृहे परिवारितः ।
स एको मृष्टम् अश्नातु यस्य आर्यो अनुमते गतः ॥ ॥२-७५-३४॥
putraiḥ dāraiḥ ca bhṛtyaiḥ ca sva gṛhe parivāritaḥ । sa eko mṛṣṭam aśnātu yasya āryo anumate gataḥ ॥ ॥2-75-34॥
Translation
"Surrounded by sons, wives, and servants in his own house, may he eat delicious food all alone, by whose consent the Arya went."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"अपने घर में पुत्रों, स्त्रियों और सेवकों से घिरे होने पर भी, वह अकेला ही स्वादिष्ट भोजन खाए, cuya अनुमति se आर्य (राम) वन को गए हों।"
English Commentary
This verse invokes the Vedic concept of kevalaghah (sinful is he who eats alone). To eat sweet or rich food (mrishtam) alone while surrounded by dependents (family and servants) is the height of selfishness and a violation of the householder's dharma (Grihastha ashrama). Bharata is effectively saying, "If I wanted the kingdom for myself, may I be cursed with the mentality of a miser who denies his own family to feed his greed." It counters the idea that his motivation was personal gain.

भारतीय संस्कृति में 'बांटकर खाना' ही मनुष्यता है। ऋग्वेद में कहा गया है कि 'जो अकेला खाता है, वह पाप खाता है' (केवलाघो भवति केवलादी)। भरत कहते हैं कि परिवार और सेवकों के होते हुए भी जो व्यक्ति उन्हें दिए बिना स्वयं 'मृष्टम्' (मिष्ठान्न/स्वादिष्ट भोजन) खाता है, वह राक्षस समान है। यह स्वार्थ की पराकाष्ठा है। भरत अपने ऊपर ऐसे घोर स्वार्थी होने का श्राप लेते हैं, यह सिद्ध करने के लिए कि उन्होंने राज्य के 'भोग' के लिए राम को वन नहीं भेजा है।
