Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अप्राप्य सदृशान् दाराननपत्यः प्रमीयताम् ।
अनवाप्य क्रियाम् धर्म्याम् यश्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥ ॥२-७५-३५॥
aprāpya sadṛśān dārānanapatyaḥ pramīyatām । anavāpya kriyām dharmyām yaśyāryo'numate gataḥ ॥ ॥2-75-35॥
Translation
"May he die childless without obtaining a suitable wife, and without receiving the righteous funeral rites, by whose consent the Arya went."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वह अपने योग्य पत्नी को न पाए, निःसंतान होकर मर जाए, और उसे परलोक की (श्राद्ध आदि) धर्म-क्रियाएँ नसीब न हों, जिसकी अनुमति से आर्य (राम) वन को गए हों।"
English Commentary
Bharata stakes his legacy and afterlife. He prays that he fails to find a suitable wife and dies anapatyah (childless). In ancient belief, a son is necessary to perform the death rites (kriyam dharmyam) that ensure the soul's passage to the ancestral realm. Without these, the soul suffers. By wishing for a childless death and a lack of funeral rites, Bharata is inviting eternal damnation and the end of his lineage—a terrifying prospect for a dynast of the Ikshvaku line.

यह श्राप 'वंश' और 'मोक्ष' से सम्बंधित है। एक गृहस्थ के लिए 'सदृश दारा' (अनुरूप पत्नी) और 'अपत्य' (संतान) होना आवश्यक है ताकि पितृ-ऋण चुकाया जा सके। भरत कामना करते हैं कि यदि वे दोषी हैं, तो उनका वंश समाप्त हो जाए ('अनपत्यः')। और मरने के बाद उन्हें 'क्रियाम् धर्म्याम्' (अंतिम संस्कार/पिंडदान) न मिले। पुत्र के बिना अंतिम संस्कार न होने से आत्मा भटकती रहती है (प्रेत योनि)। यह एक भयंकर श्राप है जो इस लोक और परलोक दोनों को नष्ट करने की बात करता है।
