Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मात्मनः सम्ततिम् द्राक्षीत्स्वेषु दारेषु दुःखितः ।
आयुः समग्रमप्राप्य यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥ ॥२-७५-३६॥
mātmanaḥ samtatim drākṣītsveṣu dāreṣu duḥkhitaḥ । āyuḥ samagramaprāpya yasyāryo'numate gataḥ ॥ ॥2-75-36॥
Translation
"May he not see his own progeny, may he be sorrowful regarding his wives, and may he die without attaining the full span of life, by whose consent the Arya went."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वह अपनी पत्नियों के विषय में दुखी रहे, अपनी संतान का मुख न देख पाए और पूर्ण आयु (सौ वर्ष) को प्राप्त किए बिना ही मर जाए, जिसकी अनुमति से आर्य (राम) वन को गए हों।"
English Commentary
This is a reiteration of domestic misery. He curses himself to be duhkhitah (sorrowful) regarding his wives and never to see his lineage (santatim). Furthermore, he asks for a shortened life span, denied the ayuh samagram (full life, traditionally 100 years). This counters the accusation that he sought the throne to enjoy a long and prosperous reign. Instead, he wishes for a life cut short and filled with domestic grief if he is guilty of treachery.

पिछले श्लोक की तरह यहाँ भी पारिवारिक सुख के नाश की बात है। 'स्वेषु दारेषु दुःखितः' का अर्थ है कि वैवाहिक जीवन क्लेशपूर्ण हो। 'आयुः समग्रमप्राप्य' का अर्थ है अकाल मृत्यु (premature death)। वेदों में 'शतायु' (100 वर्ष) की कामना की जाती है। अकाल मृत्यु को पाप का फल माना जाता है। भरत कहते हैं कि राम को वन भेजकर यदि मैंने कोई 'सुख' चाहा है, तो मुझे इसके विपरीत केवल दुःख, संतानहीनता और अल्पायु प्राप्त हो।
