Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राज स्त्री बाल वृद्धानाम् वधे यत् पापम् उच्यते ।
भृत्य त्यागे च यत् पापम् तत् पापम् प्रतिपद्यताम् ॥ ॥२-७५-३७॥
rāja strī bāla vṛddhānām vadhe yat pāpam ucyate । bhṛtya tyāge ca yat pāpam tat pāpam pratipadyatām ॥ ॥2-75-37॥
Translation
"The sin that is declared in the killing of a king, a woman, a child, or an elder, and the sin in abandoning a servant (dependent)—may he incur that sin, by whose consent the Arya went."

"राजा, स्त्री, बालक और वृद्ध की हत्या करने में जो पाप बताया गया है, तथा सेवक (शरणागत) को त्यागने में जो पाप है, वह पाप उसे लगे जिसकी अनुमति से आर्य (राम) वन को गए हों।"
English Commentary
Bharata aggregates the most heinous crimes imaginable. Killing a King (regicide), a woman, a child, or an elderly person are acts of extreme cowardice and evil, strictly condemned in Dharmashastras. He adds "abandoning a servant" to this list, emphasizing the moral failing of betraying those who depend on you. By invoking the collective karma of these atrocities, Bharata is declaring that conspiring against Rama is morally equivalent to being a mass murderer of the innocent.

यहाँ भरत 'महापातक' (Mortal Sins) की श्रेणी का उल्लेख करते हैं। राजा, स्त्री, बालक और वृद्ध—ये सभी समाज के रक्ष्य (vulnerable/protected) वर्ग हैं। इनका वध करना जघन्य अपराध है। विशेषकर 'भृत्य त्यागे' (सेवक को त्यागना) भी उतना ही बड़ा पाप है क्योंकि स्वामी उसका पालनहार होता है। भरत इन समस्त पापों के समूह को अपने सिर लेते हैं। वे कौसल्या को यह विश्वास दिलाना चाहते हैं कि राम का वनवास उनके लिए राजा या बालक की हत्या करने जैसा ही घोर पाप है।
