Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सम्ग्रामे समुपोढे स शत्रुपक्ष्भयम्करे ।
पलायामानो वध्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमे गतः ॥ ॥२-७५-३९॥
saṃgrāme samupoḍhe sa śatrupakṣabhayaṃkare । palāyamāno vadhyeta yasyāryo’numate gataḥ ॥ ॥2-75-39॥
Translation
If Arya (Rama) went to the forest with my consent, may that person be killed while fleeing from a fierce battle that strikes terror into the enemy ranks.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि आर्य (श्री राम) का वनगमन मेरी सहमति से हुआ हो, तो वह (पापी) शत्रु पक्ष में भय उत्पन्न करने वाले घोर संग्राम के छिड़ जाने पर, पीठ दिखाकर भागता हुआ मारा जाए।
English Commentary
This oath taken by Bharata is deeply significant within the context of the Kshatriya (warrior) code of conduct. For a warrior, fleeing from the battlefield is considered the ultimate disgrace, and being killed while retreating is seen as a ticket to hellish realms rather than the heavenly abode promised to those who die fighting heroically. By invoking such a fate upon himself, Bharata is essentially stating that if he had any hand in Rama's exile, he deserves the worst spiritual and social ignominy possible for a prince. It highlights his desperation to prove his innocence to Queen Kausalya. He equates the act of conspiring against Rama with the act of cowardice in battle, thereby elevating his loyalty to Rama to the status of his highest warrior duty.

भरत जी द्वारा ली गई यह शपथ क्षत्रिय धर्म की दृष्टि से अत्यंत गंभीर है। एक क्षत्रिय के लिए युद्धभूमि से पीठ दिखाकर भागना और उस अवस्था में मारा जाना सबसे बड़ा कलंक और पाप माना जाता है। वेदों और स्मृतियों में कहा गया है कि जो योद्धा सम्मुख युद्ध में प्राण त्यागता है, उसे वीरगति और स्वर्ग प्राप्त होता है, किन्तु जो भागते हुए मारा जाता है, वह नरक का भागी होता है। भरत यहाँ माता कौशल्या को विश्वास दिलाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं कि श्री राम का वनवास उनके लिए उतना ही पीड़ादायक है जितना किसी अन्य के लिए। वे अपने ऊपर सबसे जघन्य क्षत्रिय-पाप का आह्वान करते हैं यह सिद्ध करने के लिए कि इस षड्यंत्र में उनका रंच मात्र भी हाथ नहीं है। यह श्लोक भरत के शौर्य और उनके नैतिक मूल्यों की उच्चता को दर्शाता है।
