कपालपाणिः पृथिवीमटताम् चीरसम्वृतः ।
भिक्समाणो यथोन्मत्तो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतह् ॥ ॥२-७५-४०॥
kapālapāṇiḥ pṛthivīmaṭatām cīrasaṃvṛtaḥ । bhikṣamāṇo yathonmatto yasyāryo’numate gataḥ ॥ ॥2-75-40॥
Translation
If Arya went forth with my consent, may he (who agreed to it) wander the earth clad in rags, like a madman, begging for alms with a skull in his hand.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि आर्य मेरी सहमति से वन गये हैं, तो वह (पापी) हाथ में कपाल (भीख का कटोरा/खोपड़ी) लेकर, फटे-पुराने चीथड़े पहनकर, पागल की तरह भीख मांगता हुआ पूरी पृथ्वी पर भटकता रहे।
English Commentary
Bharata invokes a curse of extreme destitution and social ostracization. The image of wandering with a 'kapala' (skull) in hand is culturally specific; in ancient Indian penance traditions, carrying a skull as a begging bowl was often the prescribed expiation for heinous crimes like Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). By using this imagery, Bharata suggests that conspiring against Rama is a sin of equal magnitude to the worst crimes imaginable. He is wishing upon himself a life of madness, poverty, and total humiliation—a stark contrast to the royal life he is being accused of coveting. This hyperbolic self-condemnation serves to dismantle the suspicion that he desires the throne, showing instead that he views a life without Rama as a living hell.

यहाँ भरत जी एक राजपुत्र के लिए अकल्पनीय दुर्दशा का आह्वान कर रहे हैं। 'कपालपाणि' शब्द का प्रयोग अत्यंत सांकेतिक है। धर्मशास्त्रों में ब्रह्महत्या जैसे महापाप के प्रायश्चित के लिए 'कपालव्रत' का विधान है, जिसमें पापी को हाथ में नर-कपाल लेकर भिक्षा मांगनी पड़ती थी। भरत परोक्ष रूप से कह रहे हैं कि राम को वन भेजना ब्रह्महत्या के समान पाप है। यदि उन्होंने ऐसा किया है, तो उन्हें समाज से बहिष्कृत होकर, विक्षिप्त अवस्था में दर-दर भटकना पड़े। यह शपथ उनकी मानसिक वेदना और ग्लानि को प्रकट करती है। वे राजसी सुखों को ठुकराते हुए यह जता रहे हैं कि राम के बिना राज्य भोगना तो दूर, वे भिक्षुक से भी बदतर जीवन जीने का श्राप स्वयं को दे रहे हैं यदि वे दोषी हैं।
