वनवासम् न जानामि रामस्यहम् महात्मनः ।
विवासनम् वा सौमित्रेः सीतायाश्च यथाभवत् ॥ ॥२-७५-४॥
vanavāsam na jānāmi rāmasyaham mahātmanaḥ । vivāsanam vā saumitreḥ sītāyāśca yathabhavat ॥ ॥2-75-4॥
Translation
I did not know of the exile of the high-souled Rama, nor how the banishment of Saumitri (Lakshmana) and Sita came to pass.

मुझे महात्मा राम के वनवास का भी पता नहीं था और न ही मुझे यह ज्ञात था कि सुमित्रानंदन लक्ष्मण तथा सीता का निर्वासन कैसे हुआ।
English Commentary
Bharata continues to plead his ignorance, covering the most tragic aspects of the situation: the exile. By referring to Rama as Mahatmana (high-souled), implies that the very idea of exiling such a noble soul is inconceivable to him. He clarifies that he was equally unaware of the banishment of Lakshmana and Sita. The use of yathabhavat (how it happened) suggests that the mechanics of the conspiracy—the boons, the drama in the angry chamber (Kopa Bhavan)—are all news to him. He represents himself as a victim of circumstances, arriving home to find his family destroyed without his knowledge.

यहाँ भरत अपने अज्ञान का विस्तार करते हैं। वे केवल राज्याभिषेक के बारे में ही नहीं, बल्कि राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता के वनगमन जैसी दुखद घटनाओं से भी अनभिज्ञ थे। 'महात्मनः' विशेषण का प्रयोग करके वे राम के प्रति अपनी गहरी श्रद्धा और आदर व्यक्त करते हैं, जिससे यह संकेत मिलता है कि वे राम के विरुद्ध किसी भी षड्यंत्र का हिस्सा नहीं हो सकते थे। 'यथाभवत्' (कैसे हुआ) यह दर्शाता है कि उन्हें इन घटनाओं के कारण और परिस्थितियों का भी कोई ज्ञान नहीं है। यह श्लोक भरत के गहरे आघात और आश्चर्य को प्रकट करता है।
