यस्य धर्मे मनो भूयादधर्मम् स निषेवताम् ।
अपात्रवर्षी भवतु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥ ॥२-७५-४२॥
yasya dharme mano bhūyādadharmam sa niṣevatām । apātravarṣī bhavatu yasyāryo’numate gataḥ ॥ ॥2-75-42॥
Translation
May his mind, which ought to be fixed on Dharma, indulge in Adharma. If Arya went forth with my consent, may he become one who showers gifts upon the unworthy.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(यद्यपि) जिसका मन धर्म में लगा होना चाहिए, वह अधर्म का सेवन करे। यदि आर्य मेरी अनुमति से वन गये हैं, तो वह (पापी) कुपात्रों (अयोग्य व्यक्तियों) को दान देने वाला बने।
English Commentary
In Vedic tradition, the merit of charity (dana) depends heavily on the worthiness of the recipient (patra). Giving to the unworthy (apatra)—such as criminals or the immoral—is considered a waste of resources and potentially sinful, as it may fund adharmic activities. Bharata invokes a curse where his discrimination (viveka) is destroyed. He asks that his mind, which should naturally incline towards righteousness, be twisted towards unrighteousness (adharma). This is a profound curse because it signifies the destruction of the intellect and moral compass. By wishing to become an 'apatravarshi' (rain-cloud for the unworthy), he is expressing that betraying Rama is an act of such stupidity and malice that it deserves the penalty of permanent loss of wisdom.

भारतीय संस्कृति में दान का बहुत महत्व है, लेकिन दान सही पात्र (योग्य व्यक्ति) को दिया जाना चाहिए। 'अपात्रवर्षी' का अर्थ है वह व्यक्ति जो चोरों, लम्पटों या अधार्मिक लोगों को धन देता है। ऐसा दान पुण्य के बजाय पाप का कारण बनता है क्योंकि उस धन का दुरुपयोग होता है। भरत यहाँ कह रहे हैं कि यदि वे दोषी हैं, तो उनकी बुद्धि भ्रष्ट हो जाए। वे धर्म को छोड़कर अधर्म के मार्ग पर चलें और अपनी संपत्ति का प्रयोग पाप को बढ़ावा देने में करें। 'धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्' (बुद्धि को सन्मार्ग पर प्रेरित करना) की वैदिक प्रार्थना के विपरीत, भरत अपने लिए कुबुद्धि और विवेकहीनता का श्राप मांग रहे हैं, जो एक ज्ञानी व्यक्ति के लिए सबसे बड़ा अभिशाप है।
