Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तृष्णार्तम् सति पानीये विप्रलम्भेन योजयेत् ।
लभेत तस्य यत्पापम् यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥ ॥२-७५-५७॥
tṛṣṇārtam sati pānīye vipralambhena yojayet । labheta tasya yatpāpam yasyāryo’numate gataḥ ॥ ॥2-75-57॥
Translation
The sin incurred by one who deceives a person tormented by thirst when water is available—may he incur that sin, if Arya went forth with my consent.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पानी होते हुए भी जो प्यास से व्याकुल व्यक्ति को धोखा देता है (पानी नहीं देता), उसे जो पाप लगता है, वह पाप उसे प्राप्त हो जिसकी सहमति से आर्य वन को गये हैं।
English Commentary
Denying water to the thirsty is universally condemned, but in the hot climate of India, it is considered particularly heinous. The specific phrasing here—deceiving the thirsty when water is actually available—adds a layer of malice to the act. It is not just selfishness; it is active cruelty. Bharata uses this metaphor to describe the moral weight of the accusation against him. If he conspired to banish Rama, he suggests he is as depraved as a man who would mock a dying, thirsty person by withholding water.

'जलदान' को महादान कहा गया है। प्यासे को पानी न पिलाना, और विशेष रूप से तब जब पानी उपलब्ध हो, अत्यंत अमानवीय कृत्य है। 'विप्रलम्भ' का अर्थ है धोखा देना—अर्थात प्यासे को यह कहना कि पानी नहीं है जबकि पानी है। यह कृपणता और क्रूरता की पराकाष्ठा है। भरत, जो दया और धर्म की मूर्ति हैं, अपने ऊपर ऐसे पाप का आह्वान करते हैं जो मानवता के विरुद्ध है। वे माता कौशल्या को विश्वास दिला रहे हैं कि राम को वन भेजना, प्यासे को पानी से वंचित करने जैसा ही क्रूर और पापी कृत्य है।
