Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रेत कार्याणि यानि अस्य कर्तव्यानि विशाम्पतेः ।
तानि अव्यग्रम् महा बाहो क्रियताम् अविचारितम् ॥ ॥२-७६-११॥
Preta karyani yani asya kartavyani vishampateh । Tani avyagram maha baho kriyatam avicharitam ॥ ॥2-76-11॥
Translation
O mighty-armed one! Whatever funeral rites are to be performed for the Lord of the Earth (the King), let them be done immediately without hesitation or delay.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाबाहु! महाराज (विशाम्पति) के जो भी प्रेत-कर्म (अन्त्येष्टि संस्कार) करने योग्य हैं, उन्हें बिना किसी विचार और विलंब के शीघ्र संपन्न करो।
English Commentary
In Hindu Dharma Shastras, the timing of Preta Karyani (funeral rites) is critical. Sage Vasistha instructs Bharata that further hesitation or delay is inauspicious. Once the soul has departed, the rites must be performed swiftly to ensure the peace of the departed spirit. By using the title Vishampateh (Lord of the People/Earth), Vasistha reminds Bharata that Dasharatha was not just a father but a sovereign King; therefore, his rites must be conducted with the corresponding royal dignity and urgency without allowing grief to cause procrastination.

हिंदू धर्मशास्त्रों में 'प्रेत कार्य' (अन्त्येष्टि संस्कार) के लिए समय की पाबंदी का विशेष महत्व है। महर्षि वशिष्ठ भरत को निर्देश देते हैं कि अब और अधिक विचार या विलंब करना उचित नहीं है। देह त्यागने के पश्चात जीवात्मा की शांति के लिए अंतिम संस्कार शीघ्र अति शीघ्र किया जाना चाहिए। 'विशाम्पतेः' शब्द का प्रयोग कर वशिष्ठ जी भरत को याद दिलाते हैं कि दशरथ केवल एक पिता नहीं, बल्कि एक प्रजापालक राजा थे, अतः उनका अंतिम संस्कार उसी राजसी विधि-विधान और सम्मान के साथ तुरंत होना चाहिए।
