गधान् उच्च अवचामः च अन्याम्स् तत्र दत्त्वा अथ भूमिपम् ।
ततः सम्वेशयाम् आसुः चिता मध्ये तम् ऋत्विजः ॥ ॥२-७६-१७॥
Gandhan uchcha avachamah cha anyams tatra dattva atha bhumipam । Tatah samveshayam asuh chita madhye tam ritvijah ॥ ॥2-76-17॥
Translation
Having placed various kinds of high-quality fragrances there, the Ritvik priests then laid the Ruler of the Earth in the midst of the pyre.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वहाँ (चिता पर) अनेक प्रकार की उच्च कोटि की सुगंधित सामग्री डालकर, ऋत्विजों ने राजा (भूमिप) को चिता के मध्य में लिटाया।
English Commentary
The pyre was layered with various high-quality fragrant substances (gandhan) before receiving the body. The Ritvik priests placed the King in the exact center of the pyre (chita madhye), adhering to scriptural injunctions. The term Bhumipam (Protector/Lord of the Earth) is ironic and poignant here; he who protected the earth is now laid upon the wood grown from it, ready to be returned to the elements. The priests handle the body, treating the funeral as a sacred ritual offering.

चिता केवल लकड़ियों का ढेर नहीं थी, बल्कि उसे विभिन्न गंध-द्रव्यों (सुगंधित पाउडर या लेप) से सुसज्जित किया गया था। 'उच्चावचान्' का अर्थ है विभिन्न प्रकार के (छोटे और बड़े या विविध) सुगंधित पदार्थ। ऋत्विजों द्वारा राजा को 'चिता मध्य' (चिता के बीचों-बीच) लिटाना एक शास्त्रीय विधि है। यहाँ राजा को 'भूमिप' (भूमि का पालन करने वाला) कहा गया है, जो अब स्वयं उसी भूमि की गोद में अंतिम संस्कार के लिए लेटे हैं।
