शिबिकाभिः च यानैः च यथा अर्हम् तस्य योषितः ।
नगरान् निर्ययुस् तत्र वृद्धैः परिवृताः तदा ॥ ॥२-७६-१९॥
Shibikabhishcha yanaishcha yatha arham tasya yoshitah । Nagaran niryayus tatra vriddhaih parivritah tada ॥ ॥2-76-19॥
Translation
The wives of the King came out of the city in palanquins and vehicles appropriate to their rank, surrounded by elders.

राजा की पत्नियाँ अपनी-अपनी योग्यता के अनुसार पालकियों और वाहनों द्वारा, वृद्धों से घिरी हुई नगर से बाहर निकलीं।
English Commentary
The cremation ground is typically outside the city limits. The queens, including Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi, travel there in vehicles befitting their royal status (yatha arham). Crucially, they are described as vriddhaih parivritah (surrounded by elders). This highlights the protective social structure where the elders of the court and family provide a shield and support system for the grieving widows during their most vulnerable moment, escorting them to the funeral site.

अंत्येष्टि स्थल (श्मशान) प्रायः नगर से बाहर होता है। रानियाँ, जिनमें कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकेयी आदि शामिल हैं, अपनी मर्यादा ('यथा अर्हम्') के अनुसार वाहनों में वहां पहुंचीं। शोक की इस घड़ी में उन्हें 'वृद्धैः परिवृताः' (बुजुर्गों द्वारा घिरा हुआ) बताया गया है। यह भारतीय संस्कृति का एक सुंदर पहलू है—विपत्ति के समय परिवार और समाज के बुजुर्ग आगे आकर शोकाकुल महिलाओं को संरक्षण और संबल प्रदान करते हैं।
