Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वसिष्ठस्य वचः श्रुत्वा भरतः धारणाम् गतः ।
प्रेत कार्याणि सर्वाणि कारयाम् आस धर्मवित् ॥ ॥२-७६-३॥
vasiṣṭhasya vacaḥ śrutvā bharataḥ dhāraṇām gataḥ । preta kāryāṇi sarvāṇi kārayām āsa dharmavit ॥ ॥2-76-3॥
Translation
Hearing Vashistha's words, Bharata, the knower of Dharma, regained his composure and caused all the funeral rites to be performed.

वसिष्ठ जी के वचन सुनकर, धर्म को जानने वाले भरत ने धैर्य धारण किया और समस्त प्रेत-कार्य (अंत्येष्टि संबंधी तैयारियां) आरंभ करवाईं।
English Commentary
This verse showcases Bharata's discipline. Despite his devastating grief, he immediately responds to the Guru's command. The term Dharmavit implies that he understands the hierarchy of duties: spiritual instruction overrides personal emotion. Dharanam gatah signifies a regaining of mental poise or fortitude. He switches modes from a grieving son to the officiating chief mourner, organizing the logistics of the state funeral (preta karyani). This swift compliance demonstrates why he is considered fit to rule, even though he refuses the throne—he respects authority and duty above all else.

भरत को 'धर्मवित्' (धर्म का ज्ञाता) कहा गया है। धर्मवित् होने का लक्षण यही है कि गुरु की आज्ञा मिलते ही व्यक्ति अपनी व्यक्तिगत भावनाओं को किनारे रखकर कर्तव्य में लग जाए। 'धारणाम् गतः' का अर्थ है कि उन्होंने बिखरते हुए मन को समेटा और धैर्य धारण किया। यह भरत की आत्म-शक्ति का परिचायक है। उन्होंने स्वयं संस्कार नहीं किया बल्कि 'कारयाम् आस' (करवाना शुरू किया)—अर्थात सेवकों और पुरोहितों को आवश्यक सामग्री जुटाने और तैयारी करने का निर्देश दिया, जैसा कि एक यजमान और राजकुमार को करना चाहिए।
