विधवा पृथिवी राजम्स् त्वया हीना न राजते ।
हीन चन्द्रा इव रजनी नगरी प्रतिभाति माम् ॥ ॥२-७६-९॥
vidhavā pṛthivī rājams tvayā hīnā na rājate । hīna candrā iva rajanī nagarī pratibhāti mām ॥ ॥2-76-9॥
Translation
"Widowed is the Earth without you, O King, and she shines no longer. The city appears to me like a night bereft of the moon."

"हे राजन! आपके बिना यह पृथ्वी विधवा हो गई है और अब सुशोभित नहीं हो रही है। यह नगरी (अयोध्या) मुझे वैसी ही प्रतीत हो रही है जैसे चंद्रमा से रहित (अंधेरी) रात।"
English Commentary
Bharata employs powerful metaphors of deprivation. The Earth (Prithivi) is personified as the King's consort; without him, she is Vidhava (widowed), having lost her protector and glory. The city is compared to a night without the moon (hina chandra iva rajani). In Sanskrit poetics, the moon represents delight, coolness, and beauty. A moonless night is dark and dangerous. Bharata expresses that the guiding light of the civilization has been extinguished, leaving the kingdom in metaphorical darkness and despair.

राजा को 'पति' या 'भर्ता' (पालन करने वाला) माना जाता है और पृथ्वी को उसकी पत्नी। राजा के बिना राज्य 'विधवा' के समान श्रीहीन और अरक्षित हो जाता है। भरत यहाँ दो उपमाएं देते हैं—विधवा पृथ्वी और चंद्रहीन रात्रि। जैसे चंद्रमा के बिना रात डरावनी और अंधकारमय होती है, वैसे ही दशरथ (और राम) के बिना अयोध्या की शोभा नष्ट हो गई है। यह श्लोक अयोध্যা के उदास वातावरण और भरत के मन में छाई निराशा का चित्रात्मक वर्णन करता है। 'न राजते' (सुशोभित नहीं होती) का अर्थ है कि राज्य की रौनक चली गई है।
