Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उत्थाप्यमानः शक्रस्य यन्त्र ध्वजैव च्युतः ।
अभिपेतुस् ततः सर्वे तस्य अमात्याः शुचि व्रतम् ॥ ॥२-७७-१०॥
Utthapyamanah shakrasya yantra dhvajayeva chyutah । Abhipetus tatah sarve tasya amatyah shuchi vratam ॥ ॥2-77-10॥
Translation
He fell like Indra's mechanical banner (flagstaff) that had been dislodged. Then, all his ministers of pure vows rushed towards him to lift him up.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(गिरते हुए भरत ऐसे लग रहे थे) जैसे इंद्र का 'यंत्र-ध्वज' गिर गया हो। तब पवित्र व्रत वाले सभी मंत्रियों ने उनकी ओर दौड़कर उन्हें उठाया (सम्भाला)।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a classic simile here: the Shakra-dhvaja (Indra's Banner). In ancient times, a massive flagstaff was raised using ropes and mechanisms (yantra) during the festival of Indra. Its collapse (either at the end of the festival or due to failure) was a dramatic sight. Bharata, a man of royal stature, collapsing is compared to this falling standard. The ministers, described as shuchi vratam (of pure vows/integrity), immediately rush to support him, fulfilling their duty to the crown even in its darkest hour.

महर्षि वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक प्रसिद्ध उपमा का प्रयोग करते हैं—'शक्रध्वज' (इंद्र-ध्वज)। प्राचीन काल में इंद्र महोत्सव में रस्सियों और यंत्रों (मशीनों) के सहारे एक विशाल ध्वज खड़ा किया जाता था। उत्सव के अंत में या रस्सियाँ टूटने पर वह धड़ाम से गिरता था। भरत का गिरना उस विशाल ध्वज के गिरने जैसा राजसी और दुखद था। 'शुचि व्रतम्' विशेषण मंत्रियों के लिए है, जो पवित्र निष्ठा वाले थे और तुरंत अपने भावी राजा को संभालने दौड़े।
