English Commentary
Shatrughna characterizes the magnitude of the loss. Dasharatha is described as 'dharmajñena' (knower of righteousness) and 'mahatmana' (great-souled), emphasizing that the loss is moral and spiritual, not just personal. The verse sets up the context for his despair: the double blow of the father's death ('pitari svargam apanne') and the elder brother's exile ('rame ca aranyam ashrite'). This leaves the kingdom and the family completely vulnerable, devoid of its two primary pillars of strength and authority.
