इमाम् अपि हताम् कुब्जाम् यदि जानाति राघवः ।
त्वाम् च माम् चैव धर्म आत्मा न अभिभाषिष्यते ध्रुवम् ॥ ॥२-७८-२३॥
Imām api hatām kubjām yadi jānāti Rāghavaḥ । Tvām ca mām caiva dharma ātmā na abhibhāṣiṣyate dhruvam ॥ ॥2-78-23॥
Translation
"If the righteous Raghava (Rama) comes to know that this hunchback has been killed, he will surely never speak to you or to me again."

"यदि धर्मात्मा राघव (राम) ने जान लिया कि इस कुबड़ी (मन्थरा) की हत्या कर दी गई है, तो वे निश्चित रूप से तुमसे और मुझसे कभी बात नहीं करेंगे।"
English Commentary
Bharata plays his trump card. He knows that for Shatrughna, the ultimate punishment is not legal consequence but emotional separation from Rama. The threat that Rama "will surely never speak" (na abhibhāṣiṣyate dhruvam) to them again is the most effective deterrent. It highlights Rama's strict adherence to non-violence against the defenseless. Bharata effectively argues that killing Manthara would be a spiritual defeat that would permanently estrange them from the very person they are trying to honor. This reinforces Rama's role as the moral compass of the family.

भरत यहाँ अपना अंतिम और सबसे शक्तिशाली तर्क (brahmastra) प्रयोग करते हैं। वे जानते हैं कि शत्रुघ्न के लिए राम का प्रेम सर्वोपरि है। राम द्वारा सम्बन्ध विच्छेद या मौन धारण कर लेना ('न अभिभाषिष्यते') भरत और शत्रुघ्न के लिए मृत्युदंड से भी बड़ा दंड है। भरत चेतावनी देते हैं कि एक दासी के प्राण लेने के कारण हम अपने भ्राता राम को सदा के लिए खो देंगे। राम हिंसा और स्त्री-वध के घोर विरोधी हैं। इस तर्क के सामने शत्रुघ्न का सारा क्रोध पिघल जाता है, क्योंकि वे राम की नाराजगी सहन नहीं कर सकते।
