बलवान् वीर्य सम्पन्नो लक्ष्मणो नाम यो अपि असौ ।
किम् न मोचयते रामम् कृत्वा अपि पितृ निग्रहम् ॥ ॥२-७८-३॥
Balavān vīrya sampanno lakṣmaṇo nāma yo api asau । Kim na mocayate rāmam kṛtvā api pitṛ nigraham ॥ ॥2-78-3॥
Translation
Even that Lakshmana, who is powerful and endowed with valor—why did he not liberate Rama even by restraining (imprisoning) the father?

वह जो लक्ष्मण है, जो बलवान और पराक्रमी है, उसने भी पिता को बंदी बनाकर (निग्रह करके) राम को क्यों नहीं छुड़ा लिया?
English Commentary
This is one of the most radical verses in the Ramayana spoken by a protagonist. Shatrughna questions Lakshmana's adherence to passive obedience. He argues that Lakshmana, possessing the necessary strength (balavān), should have intervened physically. Shatrughna suggests that when a father or king acts unrighteously (adharma), it is justifiable to restrain him (pitṛ nigraham) to uphold the greater truth. This reflects a tension between pitru-bhakti (devotion to father) and the defense of the righteous. Shatrughna aligns with the view that justice for Rama supersedes the formal respect due to a senile or manipulated father. It reveals Shatrughna's pragmatic and aggressive approach to dharma compared to Rama's idealistic one.

यह श्लोक अत्यंत विवादास्पद और क्रांतिकारी है। शत्रुघ्न धर्म के उस स्वरूप पर प्रश्न उठाते हैं जो अन्याय को सहन करता है। वे लक्ष्मण की निष्क्रियता पर क्रोधित हैं। शत्रुघ्न का मत है कि यदि राजा (पिता) अन्यायपूर्ण आदेश दे, तो बलपूर्वक उस आदेश का उल्लंघन करना और राजा को नियंत्रित ('निग्रह') करना भी धर्म ही है। यह विचार 'आततायी' के वध या नियंत्रण की नीति के निकट है। शत्रुघ्न को लगता है कि राम की रक्षा के लिए पिता का अपमान या निग्रह भी स्वीकार्य होता। यह उनके उग्र क्षत्रिय स्वभाव और राम के प्रति अनन्य भक्ति को दर्शाता है, जहाँ राम के लिए वे पिता की मर्यादा लांघने को भी तैयार थे।
