लिप्ता चन्दन सारेण राज वस्त्राणि बिभ्रती ।
विविधम् विविधैस्तैस्तैर्भूषणैश्च विभूषिता ॥ ॥२-७८-६॥
Liptā candana sāreṇa rāja vastrāṇi bibhratī । Vividham vividhaistaistairbhūṣaṇaiśca vibhūṣitā ॥ ॥2-78-6॥
Translation
She was smeared with the essence of sandalwood, wearing royal garments, and decorated with various kinds of ornaments.

वह उत्तम चंदन के लेप से लिप्त थी, राजसी वस्त्र धारण किए हुए थी और भांति-भांति के अनेक आभूषणों से विभूषित थी।
English Commentary
The detailed description of Manthara serves to justify the violence that follows. Wearing "royal garments" and sandalwood paste implies she has been richly rewarded by Kaikeyi for her role in the exile. She is parading her success. In a context where the princes are weeping and wearing ascetic-like or mourning clothes, her festive attire is a grotesque display of insensitivity. It visually represents the inversion of order (adharma) in Ayodhya—where the wicked prosper while the righteous suffer. This vivid imagery heightens the emotional stakes before Shatrughna attacks her.

मन्थरा की वेशभूषा का विस्तृत वर्णन उसके अहंकार और धृष्टता को दिखाता है। 'चन्दन सारेण' (चंदन के लेप) और 'राज वस्त्राणि' (शाही कपड़े) बताते हैं कि कैकेयी ने उसे बहुत इनाम दिया है। वह स्वयं को अब साधारण दासी नहीं, बल्कि राजमाता की मुख्य परामर्शदाता मान रही है। शोक के माहौल में ऐसा श्रृंगार करना आग में घी डालने जैसा है। यह वर्णन शत्रुघ्न के क्रोध को भड़काने के लिए पर्याप्त है। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ खलनायिका के उत्कर्ष को दिखाया है, जो उसके आसन्न पतन से ठीक पहले का क्षण है।
