Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मेखला दामभिः चित्रै रज्जु बद्धा इव वानरी ।
बबासे बहुभिर्बद्धा रज्जुबद्देव वानरी ॥ ॥२-७८-७॥
Mekhalā dāmabhiḥ citrai rajju baddhā iva vānarī । Babhāse bahubhirbaddhā rajjubaddheva vānarī ॥ ॥2-78-7॥
Translation
Bound by girdle-strings of various colors, she looked like a female monkey tied with ropes. Indeed, she appeared just like a monkey bound by many ropes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह विचित्र करधनी (मेखला) की लडि़यों से ऐसी बंधी हुई थी, मानो रस्सियों से बंधी हुई कोई बंदरिया हो। वह बहुत सी रस्सियों से बंधी बंदरिया की भांति सुशोभित हो रही थी।
English Commentary
This verse uses a grotesque simile to mock Manthara. Despite her expensive ornaments, her inherent deformity and lack of grace make her look ridiculous rather than regal. The image of a "monkey tied with ropes" suggests that the jewelry constricts her rather than adorning her. It strips away any dignity she thought she possessed. Comparing her to a monkey (vānarī) might also subtly allude to the mischief and chaos associated with such creatures in the text. This description aligns the reader/listener with Shatrughna's perspective: looking at her, one sees not a respected elder servant, but a distorted, meddlesome creature deserving of contempt.

वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ व्यंग्य और उपहास का प्रयोग करते हैं। मन्थरा ने स्वयं को सजाने के लिए जो गहने और करधनियाँ पहनी थीं, वे उसके कुबड़े शरीर पर बेतुकी लग रही थीं। कवि उसकी तुलना 'रज्जु बद्धा वानरी' (रस्सियों से बंधी बंदरिया) से करते हैं। यह उपमा उसे अमानवीय (dehumanize) बनाती है और उसके कृत्यों की कुरूपता को उसके शारीरिक रूप से जोड़ती है। 'वानरी' शब्द चंचलता और विनाशकारी स्वभाव का भी प्रतीक हो सकता है। यह दृश्य हास्यास्पद होने के साथ-साथ यह भी संकेत देता है कि वह अब अपनी ही साजिशों (या गहनों) के जाल में फंस गई है।
